Turn 5 Travel Event – Boarded by Pirates, because Why Not?

After leaving the frosty world of Mithril, the crew jumped back into Imperial space, headed for Regina.  Seeker Paul's secretive group had given them a book - a badly written epic "poem" telling of a crashed starship loaded with valuable cargo, and a hidden base under an octagon, with technology approaching magic.  The so-called Twilight's Peak.
Magnus was willing to follow this myth, as long as the crew made money along the way.  The trip to Regina would be thirteen jumps; with trading, about half a year.  But, there were opportunities along the Spinward Main.
Travel and trading went smoothly for most of the trip.  Along the way, Hkaaie and Seeker Paul continued to heal from their injuries.   They should be ready for action again once the ship arrives at Regina.
Everything went smoothly, that is, until the ship arrived at Pirema.  Low-tech, low-population, barely a starport.  The crew did have a small load of cargo to deliver, but the chance of taking on cargo or passengere was slim.
The jump transition into Pirema was smooth, the Cosmic Blunder arriving at the innermost gas giant to fuel up before heading to the mainworld.  After refueling and setting course for the mainworld, the ship was hailed.
"Cosmic Blunder, this is the commerce raider Blackstar.  Your ship is unarmed; ours is not.  We just want your cargo.  Maintain your current course and velocity - we will board you."
An Empress Nicole class fat trader had suddenly changed vectors on to an intercept course, and the Cosmic Blunder was lit up by active sensors.  "We need to get some weapons on this tub", Magnus mused to himself.
"Captain", CR4NK3 said, "their ship is armed with a triple missle rack and dual beam lasers.  We can not outrun either.  I suggest we agree to their demands.  They just want the cargo."
"CR4NK3, if they just wanted our cargo, they would have us jettison it.  It's all sealed against vacuum.  They want the ship.  But send an acknowledgment and ask them to dock at the front airlock.  They'll expect an ambush, so they'll dock at the rear.  And we'll be ready.  What condition is their ship?"
"Visibly, it appears worn, with sign of crudely repaired battle damage."
"Excellent.  They are low-end pirates.  They'll leave the pilot on board, but send the rest of the crew over to take us out.  Tightbeam a Signal GK distress signal to local system defense.  They won't get here before the boarding is over, but if they're on their way, the pilot probably won't fire at us as he flees."
CR4NK3 sent the acknowledgment to the pirates, and the Signal GK to the local System Defense force, who agreed to send a couple fighters and a rescue cutter.
The Blackstar docked with the Cosmic Blunder - as Magnus predicted, they docked at the rear personnel air lock.  But they docked more efficiently than Magnus expected, so Magnus, CR4NK3 and Ouroz had barely arrived in the cargo bay when the pirates boarded.  Six of them, including, to Magnus' surpise, the Pirate Captain.
Once the pirates were on board, CR4NK3 sent a signal to the airlock, locking it down.  The pirates could not retreat.  "This is my ship, you bastards!"  "Well", the pirate Captain responded, "It's gonna be ours, cause ours is falling apart.  So, this was your ship.  Kiss it goodbye - I'm sure it will miss you."

CR4NK3 moved up to cover.  As soon as he crouched down behind some crates, one of the pirates moved up and took a shot at him.  The shot missed, but hit a cargo container behind CR4NK3. "My insurance!" Magnus shouted as he and Ouroz dashed forward.
CR4NK3 returned fire at the pirate, but also missed.  The two crews continued to move up to cover, with a pair of pirates flanking to the right, the pirate captain and another pirate to the left, and two coming up the middle.  Magnus moved to intercept the flankers on the right, while CR4NK3 and Ouroz tried to defend against the rest.
Both Magnus and Ouroz manage to drop a pirate each, but one of the pirates' shots hit Ouroz.  "I'm OK.  Popped a hole in my suit, but didn't get thru my armor.  Suit's already sealed itself."
The two crews continue to maneuver and fire at each other.  A stray shot hit a chemical barrel next to the pirate captain, the resulting discharge struck the captain, shattering his faceplate and covering his face with the toxic goop.  He fell to the ground, screaming and thrashing until he went silent.
But the pirates kept up the fight.  However, they were clearly shaken by the events, as their shots started to go further off-target, and they got more careless about cover.  It did not take long after the captain went down for the crew of the Cosmic Blunder to drop the remaining pirates.
Not content with just stopping the boarders, the crew of the Cosmic Blunder boarded the pirate ship.  What the captain said was definitely true - the inside of the ship was a mess.  They made their way to the bridge, and breached the bridge hatch with no difficulty.  Inside, trying to hide behind a console, was a young woman with a pistol.  As she saw the barrel of CR4NK3's rifle, she threw down the pistol and shouted "I surrender!  I didn't like those guys anyway! I just needed the job!"
"Who are you?" Magnus asked.
"Ru Dakimam of Regina.  I thought this was a regular working passage, and didn't realize the shit I was in until it was too late.  I'm sorry!  I didn't want to be a pirate, but they said they'd space me if I didn't obey.  And they said the ship would blow up if I undocked without the captain on board."
"Well, the captain's dead, along with the rest of the bunch.  So we're going to haul the bodies over, and you're going to undock.  System Defense ships are on their way."
"But they'll kill me or put me in jail forever, and I never wanted to be a pirate.  Can't you help me out?"
"Kid" Magnus said, "I can't trust my ship and my crew to a pirate.  The risk is too high."
Seeker Paul's weak voice came across the radio to Magnus' private  channel, "Captain, I sense she is telling the truth, and is terrified.  I do not believe she deserves a pirate's fate."
Magnus signed.  "Ok, kid - we'll take you with us and drop you off at our next stop.  We'll tell System Defense that you're working passage on our ship.  Now let's go before Sysdef gets here."
The crew quickly transferred the bodies of the pirates onto their ship, in case the captain's threats of explosion were true, and then had the ship undock.  They hailed the incoming system defense force, and notified them of the pirate's demise.  After extensive paperwork, the crew was released to continue their business.
The young woman, Ru, did pick up shipboard jobs, under constant surveillance by CR4NK3, and Magnus decided to keep her on until they hit Regina.  By the time they arrived, however, she had endeared herself to the whole crew, and Magnus agreed to take her on as a crew member - at least for the time being.
When the crew arrived at Regina, Magnus and Ouroz went looking for a job, while CR4NK3 and Ru managed the unloading of cargo.  Hkaaie and Seeker Paul, while back on their feet, stayed on the ship.
Magnus and Ouroz returned.  "Good news, bad news.  The bad news is that both the salvage team Ouroz offended and LSP security have followed us here.  The good news is the job will be one jump away, on Dinom.  We'll be escorting a VIP to inspect his holdings, and we'll be taking his ship.  Hopefully by the time we get back, LSP and the salvagers will have gotten bored."
